Tensions between the two nations erupted the day before when President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico made remarks about how Ecuador viewed the results of the most recent elections, which Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa won, as “extremely regrettable.”
The former vice president of Ecuador, Jorge Glas, was holed up at the Mexican embassy in Quito when Ecuadorian police officers burst in with force on Friday.
As diplomatic tensions between the two countries grew, hours after the Mexican government had awarded Glas political refuge, the raid occurred.
The cops burst through the outer doors of the Mexican embassy in the capital of Ecuador and made their way into the main patio.

In response, the Ecuadorian government declared the Mexican ambassador persona non grata.
Mexico’s response
According to a representative for Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Alicia Bárcena, the nation is “cutting” diplomatic ties with Ecuador and expelling all diplomats from the nation right away.
She continued, “Mexico intends to file a complaint against the Ecuadorian police with the International Court of Justice.”
Bárcena said that Canseco was physically assaulted during the detention and that there had been no prior communication regarding the arrest with Ecuador’s foreign ministry.
