Marisa Abela in Back to Black (Amy Winehouse Biopic): Official Teaser
Marisa Abela plays the late singer Amy Winehouse in the movie Back to Black, which is due out soon.
Industry sensation Abela plays Winehouse in the first teaser trailer for the Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) biopic. Winehouse passed away at the age of 27, after suffering unintentional alcohol poisoning on July 23, 2011.
With a duration of just over a minute, the video provides small insights into Winehouse’s triumphs and setbacks along her ascent from an obscure vocalist to the global musical phenomenon. The film’s title was inspired by Winehouse’s power ballad “Back to Black,” which serves as the soundtrack.
The teaser also discusses Winehouse’s private life, such as her relationship with her mother Janis Winehouse, and her romance with Blake Fielder-Civil. The movie recreates a number of Winehouse’s life events, including her controversial 2008 Grammy performance. The film’s teaser hinted that it will explore her life, music, and legacy.
Harley Bird, Bronson Webb, Ansu Kabia, and Eddie Marsan are also in the cast.Back to Black was supported by The Amy Winehouse Estate, Universal Music Group, and Sony Music Publishing, according to a press statement. The British Grammy winner’s “early climb to prominence and the publication of her pioneering studio album, Back to Black” are the subjects of the film, which is marketed as a “never-before-seen peek.”
“Told from Amy’s perspective, the film is an unapologetic look at the woman behind the phenomenon and the relationship that inspired one of the most legendary albums of all time,” per the synopsis.
“My connection to Amy began when I left college and was hanging out in the creatively diverse London borough of Camden. I got a job at the legendary KOKO club, and I can still breathe every market stall, vintage shop and street,” she said. “… A few years later Amy wrote her searingly honest songs whilst living in Camden. Like with me, it became part of her DNA.”
In an earlier statement, the 56-year-old Taylor-Johnson gave Entertainment Weekly an explanation of her personal relationship with Winehouse.
The filmmaker claimed to have witnessed Winehouse’s debut performance in a talent event at Soho’s Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club: “It was immediately obvious she wasn’t just ‘talent’… she was genius.”
“As a filmmaker you can’t really ask for more. I feel excited and humbled to have this opportunity to realize Amy’s beautifully unique and tragic story to cinema accompanied by the most important part of her legacy — her music,” she added.
“I am completely conscious of the duty; with Matt Greenhalgh, my writing partner, I will make a film that we will all like and treasure forever. similar to how Amy and I do.”
