An update on the possibility of severe weather is provided by KLBK Chief Meteorologist Jacob Riley for Tuesday, May 28, 2024

For the South Plains region in western Texas and eastern New Mexico on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, a Weather Aware Day has been declared.

The heaviest storms in the region are predicted to be accompanied by damaging winds, huge hail, and possibly an isolated tornado or two in the afternoon and late evening.

For Ralls, Crosbyton, Dickens, Spur, Guthrie, Post, Lake Alan Henry, Jayton, Gail, and Snyder, an elevated risk of severe storms has been assigned, ranking them at level 3 out of 5.

For the remaining portion of the South Plains and KLBK viewing region, a level 2 out of 5 mild risk has been issued.

The far western parts of Roosevelt and Lea counties, as well as the northwest area of Curry County in eastern New Mexico, have been rated as having a level 1 out of 5 minimal risk.

If a storm forms, the main worry will be severe wind gusts that approach 80 mph.

Strong wind gusts were accompanied by big hail that was around the size of a tennis ball (2.50 inches in diameter) and one or two lone tornadoes.

The strongest storms will deliver locally heavy rainfall, which could cause some localized flooding, even if widespread flash flooding is not expected.

This event will take place in the late afternoon and early evening. Between 1-3 PM, storms are expected to start to form somewhere close to the Highway 385 and Interstate-27/Highway 87 area.

It is highly likely that areas west of Highway 385 will not see severe weather or rainfall.

Storms will start in the 2-4 PM timeframe in cities like Abernathy, Brownfield, Meadow, Tahoka, O’Donnell, Lamesa, Smyer, Sundown, Lubbock, Littlefield, Olton, Plainview, Hale Center, and Dimmitt.

Storms are expected to start in the areas of Silverton, Turkey, Quitaque, Lockney, Floydada, Matador, Ralls, Crosbyton, Spur, Dickens, Post, Lake Alan Henry, and Gail between 4-6 PM.

Storms are expected to start in Childress, Memphis, Paducah, Guthrie, Jayton, and Snyder between 6 and 8 PM.
