Since the release of much-awaited collaboration between Quavo and Lana Del Rey “Tough,” fans have been obsessed with the song’s meaning. Here is the song’s complete backstory, keeping that in mind.

The chorus begins with the words: “Tough like the scuff on a pair of old leather boots / Like the blue-collar, red-dirt attitude / Like a .38 made out of brass / Tough like the stuff in your grandpa’s glass / Life’s gonna do what it does.

The song “Tough” was initially composed in Nashville while Lana was recording “Lasso,” her next country album.

It was cowritten by an all-star cast that featured Benny Negrin, Josh Dorr, Maddox Batson, Clayton Johnson, Nick Bailey, Quavo, Elysse Jane Yulo, Josh Dorr, and Cirkut.

Co-writer Clayton Johnson shared on Instagram how “Tough” came to be.

He gave an explanation: “Lana and I were sitting in Nashville in January, just sitting there playing acoustic guitar tunes about imaginary animals and Oliver’s chew toys.

I played her a song idea from a previous session and showed her a couple of the tunes I had been working on. She had an idea about it.”

He continued: “Her and Jack gave me a call when she came home and asked if we could tweak this voice note idea that I handed over for “Tough.”

History is what’s left. Thank you to Quavo, Jack, Cirkut, Andrew, and most importantly Lana. I also want to thank the other original writers who worked on this project together in Nashville.”
