SASSUOLO, Italy: Relegation-threatened Sassuolo defeated newly crowned champions Inter Milan 1-0 at home on Saturday, resulting in Inter Milan’s second Serie A loss of the season.
The goal came from Armand Lauriente in the first half. As the only team to defeat Inter in the league this season—winning 2-1 in the rematch in September—Sassuolo has a distinct advantage against Simone Inzaghi’s team.
Sassuolo’s fight to avoid relegation was greatly aided by the outcome, as they now lie second from bottom with 29 points, with three points separating them and Cagliari in 14th position. Twenty minutes in, Josh Doig’s move to grab the ball back from Denzel Dumfries near the corner flag gave the hosts the lone goal of the game. Lauriente then placed the ball into the net from close range.
